Michele Taillon Taylor

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My preferred mode of painting is representational and I work in both watercolor and oil. My main areas of focus are portraiture and landscape.
In portraiture, I especially seek to convey the beauty I see in everyday people, and to tell a story, or to suggest an inner life. In landscape painting, my effort is to express what Alexander Pope called “the Genius of the Place,” a scene’s uniqueness in time and space – its mood or atmospherics.

My work is informed by 16th and 17th century Italian, Spanish and Dutch masters; and by 19th century British, French and American landscape artists. I also have studied Chinese art, and hope to meld my western perspective with a Taoist sensibility and reverence for the natural world
